Threads Will Allow Users to Set Their Default Feed: For You, Following, or a Custom Feed

Threads is rolling out another update. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the platform is currently testing a feature allowing users to choose their own default feed—from For You, Following, or a Custom Feed.

Why It Matters: With Bluesky’s rise to 20 million users, Meta seems to be feeling the pressure to explore features Threads users have long requested. Allowing users to select their default feed directly addresses demands for more control over their experience.

While For You feeds dominate social media with strong discovery potential, they often prioritize engagement over showing content from accounts users intentionally follow. Providing the option to default to Following or Custom Feeds strikes a better balance between discovery and personalized content—and gives users more control over their experience.

The impact of this update will vary depending on what users set as their default feed. For example:

  • Smaller creators benefit from For You feeds, which help their content reach broader audiences—something I’ve experienced firsthand, with 97% of my recent views on Threads coming from non-followers.

  • Larger creators might prefer users to set their default to the Following feed, as it allows them to maximize organic reach within their established audience.

Social media platforms will never be able to make everyone happy—whether creators, brands, publishers, or everyday users, and the various segments within those groups. However, this latest step by Threads offers users more control, which is a meaningful improvement over the status quo.
