Facebook is currently working on a newsletter feature, according to a new report by the New York Times

Facebook's newsletter product is still in the early stages, but it's said it's looking to provide journalists and writers with features to help them grow their followers, build their email lists, and monetize their newsletters through subscriptions.

Headed by the Facebook Journalism Project, the product is part of Facebook's initiative to provide users with more accurate news sources. Campbell Brown, Facebook's vice president for global news partnerships, told the New York Times the following:

"We want to do more to support the independent journalists and experts who are building businesses and audiences online. We’re exploring ways to help them benefit from the news products we’ve built, like Facebook News and subscriptions, while also building new tools to complement what journalists already find useful.”

There currently isn't a timeline for when the newsletter offering will be available but it could arrive as soon as this summer.

Facebook Looks To Capitalize On The Recent Boom Of Newsletters

This news comes less shortly after Twitter's acquisition of newsletter service, Revue. Like Twitter, Facebook is looking to capitalize on the recent boom of newsletters and attract independent journalists and writers who want to generate revenue through their writing.

Facebook’s massive audience and proven monetization tools could make it a viable competitor to Revue and Substack. Those who are already leveraging Facebook as a channel could find it easier to utilize Facebook’s newsletter feature and keep their content distribution consistent across the board.
