YouTube Rolls Out Dedicated Landing Pages For Hashtags, Improving Content Grouping & Discovery
YouTube is rolling out new dedicated landing pages for hashtags.
The Google-owned video platform announced the update in a recent blog post.
“Starting today, anyone clicking on a specific hashtag on YouTube, either on the desktop or mobile app, will see a new dedicated page that only contains videos with the hashtag, which are sorted to keep the best videos at the top.”
How Hashtags On YouTube Will Work Now
Previously, when users searched for a hashtag or clicked on one, they would see a combination of content where the hashtag was used with the video and other relatable content.
However, that is all changing. Now, when users click on a hashtag, they will see a new dedicated page that features only videos that contain that specific hashtag. The page also highlights the number of videos and channels that are using the hashtag at the top.
Hashtags historically haven't been that effective on YouTube. This update will make the hashtag experience on YouTube more similar to that of Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, where hashtags play a significant role in content grouping and discovery.
Brands & Creators Can Better Leverage Hashtags To improve Content Discovery
Brands and creators that are leveraging YouTube as a channel can now be more strategic when adding hashtags to their videos to help make their videos more discoverable. This will help influencer campaigns, too, since brands and creators can work together to leverage popular or common hashtags to expand the reach of sponsored videos beyond creators' subscriber counts. Additionally, YouTube viewers will be able to easily find more of the content they care about by searching relevant hashtags.
There’s Still Room For Improvement
The dedicated landing pages for hashtags are certainly an upgrade, but there is plenty of room for improvement. Some things that would further improve the hashtag experience on YouTube would be allowing users to follow specific hashtags and giving users the ability to sort content on hashtag landing pages by categories such as 'Top' or 'Recent.’
YouTube says it will "continue to make more updates to hashtags on YouTube in the future," so there's a chance that we'll see some of the updates mentioned above down the road.
