Days after Spotify confirmed that it was testing a new Stories feature for influencers, the music streaming service announced a new way for artists to reach their fans on Instagram.

Through Spotify’s Canvas feature, which empowers artists to transform “static track pages into mesmerizing video-art showcases,” artists are now able to share these eight-second looping videos via Instagram Stories to engage with their fans and drive click throughs to their music.

According to Spotify, the use of Canvases has a significant impact when used.

"Adding a high-quality Canvas has increased track shares by up to 200 percent, in addition to lifts in streams, saves, and artist profile visits; bringing them to Instagram is another way for artists to connect their platforms and extend their reach even further,” the streaming service said in the announcement blog post.

Currently, the feature is only available for artists who are using the Spotify for Artists app on iOS, however a version for Android is expected to launch in the near future. Artists who are interested in trying out the feature or want to learn more about it can sign up via Spotify’s Canvas dedicated site, which also provides information on best practices as well as examples of Canvases.

Insights & Analysis:

Spotify’s previous Instagram Stories integration was already helpful for artists as it provided a easy way for them to cross-promote their music in one of the most engaging content formats in Stories and on one of the most popular social media channels in Instagram. With the option to continue to cross-promote music, but in a more visually-appealing way in the form of Canvases, artists can increase their engagement with fans while driving attention to their latest music.

In other Spotify news, it recently started to a test a new social music discovery feature called Tastebuds.
