Netflix Plans to Build Products to Help Members Create & Share Content

Netflix is looking to tap into its users more to drive discovery and consumption. It’s hiring a new Product Manager, Mobile Create & Share role. The role will sit on the Member Experience Product Management team, and the individual will “build products that help members create and share content in engaging ways off-and-on Netflix.”

Why It Matters: Just months after launching Moments, which enables subscribers to save clips and share them with others across messaging and social media, Netflix is looking to take things further by investing in a role focused on expanding these kinds of features.

What those features will ultimately be remains to be seen. But they’re likely to lean more into social media-like elements, given what other streaming services have recently introduced. For example, Tubi and Peacock have rolled out social features, including short-form video feeds, as part of a broader trend of streamers trying to recreate social media-like experiences.

One specific way Netflix could help members create and share content off-and-on the platform? Giving them the ability to create content using clips from its shows. That could be an in-app experience or extend to allowing users to share clips across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and more. But for that to happen, Netflix would need to loosen its typically tight restrictions around its content.

Developing a program similar to what the NFL and NBA have, where they license out select footage to approved creators, could be one way for Netflix to get started.
