TikTok is teaming up with several brand partners for a new initiative called Small Gestures.

The initiative enables TikTok users to provide their friends and family with “much-needed comfort” and “thinking of you reminders” through the small gesture of sending a gift.

“During this continued period of social distancing, finding ways to connect with loved ones near and far is becoming increasingly hard to do. In an effort to give back and spark joy throughout the TikTok community and beyond, we've come together with our brand partners to launch 'Small Gestures,”' the short-form video app said in a blog post.

By TikTok teaming up with some of the leading brands in the music, gaming, fitness and wellness, food, and hospitality verticals, users are able to send their friends and family gifts such as a 3-month Adobe Premiere Rush membership and a one-month Dash Pass subscription for DoorDash, for free and up to three separate occasions.

Insights & Analysis:

Social media platforms have focused much of their efforts over the last two months in helping to support the battle against COVID-19. In addition to donating large monetary gifts, they are leveraging the power of their platforms to bring communities together and help them feel connected despite widespread social distancing.

TikTok’s Small Gestures gives users another opportunity to connect and support each other by sending gifts at no cost. Although the gifts available are relatively similar to what brands entice and offer people as a free trial (i.e. free three-month subscription), they still are beneficial especially considering the main focus of the initiative. With so many people and things being affected in the world, even the smallest of gifts can make a difference. Small Gestures make it easy to do just that.

Will TikTok users actually take advantage of Small Gestures and send gifts to their loved ones? We have to wait and see. But, the concept of the new initiative is appealing and really could be used across any of the social media platforms that aren’t named TikTok. As we’re seen in the past and even more now, platforms have no problems copying each other’s features or tools, so don’t be surprised if Instagram comes out with its own version of Small Gestures in the upcoming weeks.
