Wong came across a now-deleted landing page in the desktop version of Spotify that described the feature as a tool to "discover music through friends whose taste you trust." According to her, the feature works by allowing users to search for people they follow, see their listening habits and listen to the music they're listening to.
Through its existence, Spotify has relied heavily on its AI-generated recommendations and playlists for new music discovery. If Tastebuds were to actually launch, it would be the first time the popular streaming platform has allowed users to discover new music through their friends outside of being able to share music to third-party social media and messaging apps.
Over the years, there have been a few reports of the platform testing other social music discovery features such as Social Listening but they have yet to officially surface.
Spotify has gained popularity from its AI-generated recommendations and playlists, but Tastebuds would surely be an embraced feature. Through the use of its integration with Instagram Stories and Wrapped feature, we’ve seen there is a demand for users to want to share what music they’re listening to as well as see what others are listening so the launch of Tastebuds would further capitalize on this by allowing social sharing in real-time.
