Instagram Tests Replacing the Create Button With Direct Messages as Users Gravitate Toward Messaging
Instagram is testing a change that moves the Direct Message (DM) button to the main navigation bar. A creator participating in the test shared a screenshot of the update, tagging Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who responded:
Messaging is used a lot more than the create button, so we're testing putting DMs in both in the middle position like you see here, and in position two where you can still swipe over to it. We'll see how it goes.
Mosseri explained that the platform is experimenting with the DM button in both the second and middle positions of the navigation bar. While he didn’t specify where the Create button would move, it might take the original DM button’s spot.
Notably, Instagram ran a similar test a few months ago for users in the EU.
Why It Matters: This test reflects shifting user behavior on Instagram. As the platform has highlighted, more users are spending time in DMs and Stories than posting to the Feed. Testing a move that places the DM button front and center aligns with these trends, making it easier to access the app’s most active area—and I know that’s true for me personally.
At one point, I was posting daily, but now I’m lucky to share a post to the Feed once a week. However, I’m in the DMs daily, sharing and receiving Reels from friends.
While data supports the case for moving the DM button, Instagram may ultimately decide not to act on it. Stay tuned.
