Instagram Experiments With Public Collections — An Alternative for Guides

Instagram is starting to experiment with the ability for creators to add Collections to their profiles. According to a screenshot shared by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, creators will be able to open up a Collection—which consists of organized posts—and make it available for others to view. The screenshot doesn’t indicate this, but its likely Collections will then appear on a dedicated tab.

Previously, Instagram rolled out Collaborative Collections, enabling users to share and save posts together.

Why It Matters: Instagram shut down Guides in December, converting any Guides created by users into Collections. By experimenting with giving users the ability to make these collections public, Instagram is providing an alternative for users who created and consumed Guides, which were underinvested in by the platform but favored by many creators. Similar to Guides, Public Collections enables users to share content curated by topics or categories—whether it's their own content, content by others, or a mix with others, bringing a Pinterest Boards-like experience to Instagram.
