YouTube recently announced that the Trending tab in its mobile app is now becoming an Explore tab. The move is the result of testing an Explore Tab starting in 2018 and utilizing the feedback that the Google-owned video-sharing platform received during that time to come up with today’s version of the Explore tab.

Below are details on the Explore tab’s most notable features:

Easy Access To Destination Pages:

In addition to Trending videos, the Explore tab features destination pages for other popular content categories on the platform like Gaming, Music, Fashion & Beauty, News, Movies, Shows, and Learning. These destination pages are expected to expand over time.

More Prominent Creator On The Rise/Artist On The Rise Section:

The Explore tab also features a prominent Creator On The Rise and Artist on The Rise section. This section appears before other trending videos. With new creators and artists emerging on the platform everyday, YouTube believe this will make it easier for users to discover their content and connect with them and their communities.

A Trending Dedicated Tab & Section:

As mentioned above, the app still has Trending videos. Not only is there is a button dedicated to Trending videos, but there is a Trending section at the bottom of the app that will show users what’s happening on YouTube and around the world.

The Explore tab will be rolling out to all users on iOS and Android devices over the new few days.

Insights & Analysis:

The time that YouTube took to experiment and then finally roll out its Explore tab shows that it really wanted to get it right. It’s early so time will only tell, but based on what we know initially, it looks like that may end up being the case.

With the Explore tab and accompanying features like destination pages for popular categories as well as a section focused on highlighting up and coming creators and artists, YouTube not only makes it easier and faster to discover content that users are interested in, but it addresses the issue of smaller creators and artists feeling like the platform hindering their ability to get their content in front of people and grow.

Despite just being three months into the new year, YouTube has been very active with testing and rolling out new features in an effort to continue to improve the platform for creators, brands, and viewers.
