YouTube recently shared that it is testing a new 'Products In This Video' feature to help viewers discover products. When a product is mentioned or discussed in a video, viewers will see additional information, including a shopping link for that product through an overlay on the video and below the video.

In a recent addition to its YouTube test featured and experiments community forum, the Goggle-owned platform provided the following example of how the feature works:

"For example, in a ‘top 10 smartphones in 2020’ video, some viewers will see an icon on the video, along with more information below, listing the phone models included in the video."

The feature is currently being tested with a small group of users in the U.S, but there is no word on how long the platform will be testing it before deciding to roll it out.

Insights & Analysis:

YouTube has traditionally been a place for consumers to visit to find and discover new products to purchase. This feature would help make it even more of a home for product discovery and purchase.

By providing additional information and a shopping link for a product featured in a video, consumers could easily find out more information for a product they are interested in as well as easily purchase that product in just a few steps, ultimately increasing the chances of the product being purchased.

This feature would be incredibly beneficial for brands and creators. It could help brands market their products better while potentially giving creators another opportunity to monetize their videos especially those who do product reviews. Not to mention, in cases where brands and creators are collaborating on influencer marketing campaigns, the feature can help show the ROI on that collaboration, if brands can track the clicks and purchases via a specific creator/video.
