VSCO Adds A New Multimedia Creation Tool In ‘Montage’
Less than a month after giving creators the ability to publish videos to the feed, VSCO introduces a new multimedia creation tool in Montage.
The photo/video editing and sharing app announced the new tool in a recent blog post on its website, explaining the following:
“Today, we’re excited to debut Montage, our first-ever multimedia creation tool on VSCO that brings your visual storytelling to life in a new dynamic way through video. Montage offers a blank canvas for your creativity and limitless options for self-expression. You can stack and layer in one or more videos, photos, colors, and shapes to create a unique collage-like video.”
VSCO continued, explaining a few ways that Montage can be used:
“Perhaps you want to capture your favorite street style shots, memorialize your first festival experience, or create a birthday tribute for a friend to celebrate your friendship. With Montage, you can now bring your favorite moments to life, scene by scene. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the diverse perspectives and stories that make you, you.”
Montage can be accessed easily. Users first must open up VSCO Studio and select an aspect ratio as for their canvas. They have the option to choose from portrait, square or landscape. Once they have settled on an aspect ratio, they can add multiple photos and videos from their device’s camera roll. Finally, they can add in any colors and shapes and adjust the opacity of any of the photos that are layered in.
There is no limit on the number of scenes that can be added to the Montage, but only videos that are two minutes or less can be posted to the VSCO feed.
Right now, anyone on VSCO app can access Montage, however, a $20 VSCO subscription is required to be able to save and post a Montage on VSCO or any other platform.
Insights & Analysis:
With Montage, VSCO doubles down on video efforts — as it should. With increasing interest in video content creation and consumption (i.e. Instagram Stories, TikTok, YouTube, etc) especially from today’s younger generation, Montage is a great example of a platform recognizing an opportunity and launching or rolling out a feature or tool to take advantage of it.
While other platforms are trying to add tools and features that rival platforms already have, VSCO has done a great job of differentiating itself. As of right now, there isn’t a tool like Montage that exists, at least not in one centralized location, making it a noteworthy release.
As a creator myself, I’m looking forward to playing around with Montage and using it to string together some of the photos and videos that I’ve captured from recent travel experiences. My only gripe about Montage is that there aren’t any templates that you can start with so it may take a little time for users to get the workflow down and be able to create an engaging video.
Look for VSCO to roll out more video enhancements and updates in the near future especially ones that allow it to utilize the technology that Rylo, a company it recently acquired, provides.
