TikTok Expands Access to Series to More Creators, Considers Creators' Paywalled Content Across Other Platforms for Eligibility
TikTok has announced that it is expanding access to its Series feature, which enables creators to monetize their content by placing it behind a paywall.
To be eligible to join Series, creators must meet certain criteria. They must be over 18 years old, have an account that is at least 30 days old with a minimum of 10,000 followers, have posted more than three public videos in the last 30 days, and have at least 1,000 authentic video views in the same period. If a creator does not have 10,000 followers but meets the other requirements, they can still apply for Series by providing a link to their previously paywalled content on other platforms via the Creator Center in the TikTok app.
This move is noteworthy because it is one of the first times that a social media platform has considered a creator's presence on other apps when determining access to features. It also makes sense because the value of a follower or subscriber across different platforms is not the same, and the number of followers or subscribers is not necessarily linked to a creator's ability to sell content to their audiences. By allowing creators with a proven track record of selling content on other platforms but who have fewer than 10,000 followers on TikTok to be eligible for the feature, TikTok helps democratize monetization and can attract more creators who are looking to monetize through paywalled content.
