Pinterest to Begin Training AI Models with User Data, Opting Users In Automatically

Pinterest is set to begin training its AI models, known as Pinterest Canvas, using publicly available data that users save or upload to the platform.

By default, users are opted in for this process, except for those under 18, who are automatically opted in and cannot opt out. Users who prefer not to have their data used for AI training can opt out by going into Settings and unchecking the box labeled Use your data to train Pinterest Canvas in the Privacy and Data section.

This change is part of Pinterest’s updated Privacy Policy, which will take effect on April 30th.

Why It Matters: In an increasingly AI-driven world, data is key. It’s no surprise that Pinterest is leveraging its vast user base to improve its AI models. Social media platforms, holding troves of valuable user data, are increasingly tapping into this resource for AI advancements.

While users may be unhappy with the automatic opt-in process. Pinterest’s move to notify users in advance could help mitigate backlash. It likely learned from LinkedIn, which automatically opted users into AI data training without prior notice.
