OpenAI is Developing A Tool To Allow Creators to Manage How Their Work Is Used In AI Training Models

OpenAI / Media Manager

OpenAI is developing a new tool called Media Manager. This tool will allow creators and content owners to identify their work (including text, images, audio, and videos from various sources) and specify whether they want it included or excluded from machine learning research and training processes.

OpenAI is developing this tool with creators, content owners, and regulators and plans to launch it by 2025.

Why It Matters: AI companies have faced criticism for training their large language models on web content, including copyrighted work, without giving proper credit or compensation to creators and publishers. While OpenAI has argued this is fair use, it has recently taken steps to address these concerns, such as linking to original sources in responses to ChatGPT prompts.

Media Manager represents another effort by OpenAI to alleviate criticism by giving creators control over the use of their content in model training and providing insight into when their content is used. However, the ultimate effectiveness of this tool will depend on how well it is implemented and whether it is user-friendly for creators.

Publishers Get Onboard: OpenAI also signed a new deal with Dotdash Meredith, the publisher of People, Better Homes & Gardens, Investopedia, and others. This deal will allow OpenAI to license its content for training its algorithms, display content, and links to Dotdash Meredith properties in relevant responses. OpenAI will also help improve the publisher’s AI-powered ad targeting tool, D/Cipher.

Publishers have already been facing challenges driving traffic to their websites due to social media's dominance. The emergence of AI-driven search experiences is expected to add to this, which is why more publishers are choosing to partner with AI companies to adapt to the evolution of search and bring in new revenue streams.
