Instagram Announces New Updates for Direct Messages Such as Editing & Pinned Chats

Instagram

Instagram announced several new features for direct messages (DM), including:

  • Edit Messages: Users can now edit their messages within 15 minutes of sending them.

  • Pinned Chats: Up to three chats can be pinned to the top of the inbox for quick access.

  • Read Receipts Toggle: Users can choose whether to enable or disable read receipts for chats.

  • Stickers and Replies: Stickers can be saved for easy access, and users can reply to messages with stickers, GIFs, videos, photos, or voice messages.

  • Chat Themes: New chat theme options are available.

Why It Matters: These updates underscore Instagram's continued focus on improving the DM experience, which is playing a more significant role in the overall Instagram experience.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri revealed in an announcement video that more videos and photos are shared in DMs than in Stories and Feed on a given day, making Instagram’s investment in this area of the app not only logical but also aligning with user interest.

These updates collectively bring users convenience, customization, and functionality benefits. Because of this, expect Instagram to have new features related to DMs on its roadmap for the foreseeable future.
