Billboard & Logitech Partner To Launch The First-Ever Creator-Centered Music Chart To Recognize Creators Who Drive Music Consumption
Billboard and Logitech For Creators launched the first-ever creator-centered music chart in Song Breaker Chart. The chart was inspired by last year's TikTok's and Logitech's Song Breaker Awards, which celebrated creators and their vital role today in driving the sound of music and shaping pop culture.
Through Song Breaker Chart, Billboard and Logitech will recognize creators driving music consumption through content creation.
The chart provides a ranking of creators who use social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube to amplify music through content such as viral and funny videos, dance challenges, memes, and more. Along with creator rankings, the chart provides the specific songs and artists creators are supporting.
“The Song Breaker Chart is the music industry recognizing creators as pop culture powerhouses, and celebrating TikTokers who propel songs into the music charts with dance challenges and creators who encourage their large audiences to join them in a trend,” said Meridith Rojas, Global Head of Entertainment and Creator Marketing at Logitech For Creators.
The inaugural chart is available now with creators such as Usim. E. Mang (@usimmango), Vanessa Clark (@glitchgirlmaster), and Bobby B Vivid (@bobbyvvivid,) leading the charge.
Song Breaker Chart will be the second Tuesday of every month. Powered by analytics company Shareable, the chart uses a combination of engagement and view data across social media platforms to determine rankings.
The chart's launch is a nod to creators' increasing power and value.
Historically, what music publications wrote about and what radio stations played had the most impact on music consumption. However, that has shifted in recent years, mainly thanks to the emergence of short-form video. Because short-form video content often revolves around the inclusion of audio, especially music, creators incorporate music into their content.
Short-form video has birthed a new generation of creators who share music-related content, including everything from dance routines to curated Spotify playlists.
Between creators sharing content that results in viral hits ("Old Town Road") and resurfaces old classics ( "Dreams") to new companies (Breakr) launching to pair musical talent with TikTok creators, creators’ impact on the music industry isn't going unnoticed.
As creators push forward for proper recognition for their impact on pop culture, the brainchild of Billboard and Logitech is likely the first of many official ways for creators to be credited for their contributions.
The connection between social media and music is only going to get stronger; stay tuned.
