Viacom to launch a direct-to-consumer streaming service
With cord-cutting growing by the day, several companies have responded by launching their own streaming services. Following in the steps of companies like Walt Disney, broadcasting company Viacom announced during a recent earnings call that it too soon will launch a streaming service.
Viacom, who owns Paramount Pictures and cable networks such as Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon, plans to roll out a direct-to-consumer streaming service by September 2018. The ad-supported service will roll-out in the U.S. first and feature "tens of thousands of hours of content" that cuts across Viacom's extensive library.
Viacom's move into the streaming space won't be a easy one. Besides Netflix dominating the crowded market, the company will face stiff competition in Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Now, CBS All Access, YouTube TV, and a host of others.
