Twitter has launched a redesigned in-app camera that allows you to easily share photos, videos, and livestreams.

The social media platform made the announced via a tweet that included a short video of how the camera works.

The camera can be accessed by swiping left from the main timeline. You can capture photos by tapping the camera button and record videos by holding the camera button. Additionally, you can start a live-stream by tapping the “live” button.

Photos and videos that are taken with the camera will appear with a colorful chyron and the option to add a location and caption up to 280 characters. The platform will also suggest hashtags for your photos or videos based on the location that you add. Unlike native cameras on other social media platforms, there isn’t an option to upload photos or videos that you’ve already taken.

“This a camera to reach the world and not just your followers,” Keith Cole, VP of Product at Twitter said.

With the launch of the redesigned camera, Twitter seems to be playing catch up with the likes of Instagram and Snapchat, both of which are heavy on visuals. In addition, the camera and complementary features are reminiscent of Stories, making me think that a full-fledged Stories feature could arrive sometime down the line. As much as I love the content format and think that a majority of platforms should add the feature to take advantage of its current popularity, I feel like it could be too much for Twitter and actually take away from what separates Twitter from all the other social media channels out there. Regardless, I wouldn’t be too surprised if it does go the Stories route.
