Tumblr Will Discontinue Its Creator Monetization Feature, Post+
Tumblr has announced that it will discontinue Post+, a feature that enables creators to monetize their content through paid subscriptions for exclusive content.
Starting from December 1st, creators will no longer have access to Post+ for their blogs. However, existing Post+ content will remain accessible until the end of the year.
In early 2024, the option to create new Post+ content will be removed, and existing Post+ content will be set to private unless the creator chooses to make the posts public.
According to Tumblr, Post+ did not perform as expected, and the costs associated with maintenance and operation are no longer justifiable based on its current usage.
Why It Matters: Throughout 2023, there have been several instances of social media platforms discontinuing features, such as Instagram removing Guides. Similar to Tumblr, platforms often take this action when usage is low or when the feature requires significant resources to maintain.
In the case of Tumblr, the platform is undergoing substantial changes. Due to annual losses of 30 million dollars and a lack of progress toward user base and revenue goals, Matt Mullenweg, the CEO of Tumblr's parent company Automattic, has stated that going forward, the focus will be on the "core functionality" of Tumblr.
While there was some excitement about the potential for a TikTok-like experience and a bigger focus on creators a few months ago, with the latest move, Tumblr will be even more deprioritized as a platform for creators.
