Telegram Introduces New Reward System for Creators with Revenue Sharing from Ads In Channels
Telegram has rolled out a new rewards system for creators. Owners of public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers are eligible to receive 50% of the revenue generated from ads displayed in their channels.
Ads will be purchased, and rewards will be distributed via Toncoins, a cryptocurrency powered by the TON Blockchain, which has low fees and fast transaction speeds. Creators will be able to withdraw rewards as Toncoins or reinvest them in Telegram ads, collectible usernames, or premium giveaways.
Telegram says its ads differ from those on other apps as they are exclusively displayed in large public channels and not in chats, chat lists, or other interfaces. Plus, these ads are not based on user data and directly benefit channel owners.
Why It Matters: Telegram joins YouTube, Meta, TikTok, X (Twitter), and others, offering some form of revenue-sharing with creators, although YouTube is the most established. YouTube recently reported that it has disbursed over $70 billion to creators, artists, and media companies through the YouTube Partner Program.
With this addition, Telegram creators have another way to monetize their channels, in addition to existing options like exclusive content and paid subscriptions. According to Telegram, channels generate over 1 trillion views, which means there is a huge potential for eligible creators to generate meaningful revenue.
Ad revenue sharing has become one of the preferred ways for creators to monetize their social media presence. As YouTube has shown, it can be quite lucrative. It also serves as a means for social media platforms to reward creators for the pivotal role they play in their success.
