Snapchat Adds the Ability for Creators to Share & Upload Longer Videos
Snapchat has added the ability for creators to share longer videos. Now, creators can share videos up to three minutes long, and upload five-minute videos to Chats, Stories, and Spotlight.
Why It Matters: Snapchat is following the lead of TikTok and Instagram, both of which support longer videos. TikTok rewards creators for sharing videos longer than a minute with increased views and financial incentives. Instagram is in the early stages of enabling creators to upload Reels up to three minutes long.
While Snapchat hasn't specified particular benefits for sharing longer videos, it does mention a more seamless viewing experience. It's possible that they may eventually incentivize creators for sharing longer videos, especially to its TikTok-like Spotlight feature.
Considering that platforms typically reward creators for adopting new features, those already using Snapchat could think about repurposing some of their longer videos from other platforms for Spotlight. This could lead to incremental performance improvements or provide an advantage before longer videos become common on Snapchat.
In February, Snapchat's CEO, Evan Spiegel, unveiled plans to consolidate Spotlight and Stories to create a more unified user experience, which would also make the integration of longer videos more seamless.
