Pinterest has rolled out a new Today tab, which is a new section of its platform that features daily inspiration with curated topics and Trending Pins.

The new tab was scheduled to launch at a later date, however, it was moved up as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and more people staying home and using Pinterest for discovery. Pinterest says that over the weekend, it saw an all-time high around the world with more saves and searches on the platform than any other weekend in history. It also reports that many people are using it for topics related to the following: planning what to cook, finding lesson plans and craft projects for kids, and tips for growing vegetables.

With the Today tab, users will be able to explore popular and timely ideas more easily. These include categories like kid-friendly baking ideas, self-care tips, family-favorite movies, and comfort food recipes.  At launch, ideas will be curated by the Pinterest team with contributions from guest editors soon.

Expert information from the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control relating to the coronavirus pandemic will also be added in the coming weeks.

Along with the tab, the platform is launching a new compassionate search for desktop that comes as a result of search inquiries for “calming quotes” and “stress relief” increasing. Now, when users search for terms like these, there will be options for them to view a collection of emotional well-being activities by emotional health experts to help them relax and feel better.

The Today tab is available now and users can access it by clicking Today at the top of their home feeds.

Insights & Analysis:

As someone passionate about social media and tech, it’s been exciting to see platforms from social media apps to music streaming services launch new features and tools. However, I wish it was happening under different circumstances and not the result of an pandemic that has everyone being confirmed to their homes.

With social media usage increasing, the Today tab will certainly be useful as more and more people utilize the platform to find inspiration for things to do at home especially when it comes to cooking meals or doing activities with children. Pinterest has always been a powerful source for discovery and given the circumstances, it can be argued that it is even more valuable now that people are spending more time at home and need creative ways to fulfill it.

Although Pinterest was working on the new tab before the pandemic, it can still be considered a strong example of how platforms have launched or rolled out new tools and features related to COVID-19. Whether it be tools that filter coronavirus misinformation or features that help people enjoy life at home a bit more, look for platforms to continue to leverage their strengths to combat the coronavirus directly and in-directly.
