Flipboard Adds Ability to Follow Anyone in the Fediverse
Flipboard has introduced the ability for users to follow anyone in the fediverse. This update enables users to follow and interact with profiles from Threads (with fediverse sharing enabled), Mastodon, Pixelfed, and other federated platforms on Flipboard.
This can be done across the following experiences:
Explore: A new Fediverse tab in the Search section highlights fediverse profiles such as President Biden, Marques Brownlee, George Takei, Taylor Lorenz, and more, which can also be discovered across relevant categories.
Community: The Community tab on the Home Page features curated content collections and profiles to follow, selected by Flipboard’s editorial team.
Search: Users can now search for accounts and find fediverse profiles in a dedicated Fediverse Accounts section.
When users follow accounts from other fediverse platforms, posts from those accounts appear in the Fediverse Activity carousel within their For You feed.
Why It Matters: Flipboard has been a strong advocate of the fediverse, adding new features and tools to deepen its integration over the past year. Last spring, it expanded its fediverse integration to over 400 creators (including myself).
The social magazine’s latest update benefits both consumers and creators. Users can now follow their favorite creators across federated platforms from one place and engage with their content more easily.
For creators, who have federated accounts, this means the potential to reach larger audiences and drive engagement with no additional lift.
