Nike to sell select sneakers on Instagram as part of its new initiative
Shortly after announcing its plan to sell sneakers and apparel on Amazon, Nike follows it up with its Instagram initiative. In hopes of capturing more of the youth demographic, the Swoosh will now sell select sneakers on Instagram. CEO Mark Parker recently made the announcement during the brand's Q4 earnings call.
Details are still scare, but Nike will likely utilize Instagram's "shopping tags" function that was launched back in November 2016 and has been used by brands like Warby Parker and Kate Spade. Products that are available for sale on Instagram will have a sponsored tag. When a user clicks on it, the product's description and price will appear with a purchase button. In some cases, users will be directed to the brand's website.
Allowing consumers to buy products on Instagram is a no brainer for Nike, who has one of the biggest followings on the photo sharing app with 73.3 millions followers. With over 700 million people using Instagram and a majority of users being on the younger side, Instagram is a great way for Nike to target them.
In other Nike news, they recently revealed a new 150,000 square foot headquarters in NYC. Read more about it here.
