Twitch recently announced it’s now selling gift cards.

"Sending one of our brand new Twitch gift cards is a great way to help the Twitch fans in your life meet fans like them, support their favorite streamers, and be part of the next big thing right as it’s happening," the popular live streaming platform said in a blog post.

Digital gift cards can be purchased at twitch.tv/giftcard in values of $25, $50, $100, and $200. They also come in unique designs for birthdays, graduations, and other celebratory moments. Physical cards will also be available at retailers like Best Buy and Game Stop soon. These gift cards will be available in ranges from $15 to $200.

Whether digital or physical, gift cards can be used across the platform in a few ways, including:

Subscriptions: Subscribing supports the streamer while also rewarding the subscriber with unique benefits for that Twitch channel. The longer you subscribe, the more you get.

Bits: Bits are a great way to interact with streamers and the community. You can unlock unique emotes, and celebrate and create special moments by cheering with Bits.

Gift Subscriptions: When you love a stream so much, you just want to invite more friends in. Spread the love by gifting Subscriptions to other viewers in the channel.

As of right now, gift cards are only available in the U.S.; however, the platform is looking to offer them in other countries down the line.

Gift cards have become more and more part of the social media experience recently due to the pandemic. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok have features that allow businesses and creators to link out to gift cards, however, Twitch is taking a slightly different approach here with its gift card feature since the gift cards are to be used directly on the platform versus outside of the platform.

With the usage of Twitch increasing for both creators and viewers, gift cards provide an easy way for both sides to connect. Viewers can support their favorite creators by using the gift cards for subscriptions, Bits or gift subscriptions, which helps creators monetize their presence on the platform. Since creator monetization has started to play a significant role in what time and effort creators are putting in on platforms, a small addition like this can make platforms even more appealing to creators and potentially aide in creators sharing more content on the platform.

The addition of gift cards also has the potential to bring new viewers to Twitch. For example, someone could purchase a gift card for a friend or a family, which could result in them checking out Twitch for the first time or exploring the platform more. This isn’t too different from when you receive a gift card to a new restaurant that you haven’t been to before and becoming a frequent customer.

Gift cards are the latest update that Twitch has made in recent weeks. Last week, it started to roll out a redesigned channel page that gives creators more control over their page and improves the viewer experience.

Keep an eye out on Twitch; expect it to keep making updates to the platform.
