Netflix might start to look a bit more like Instagram.

The movie/TV streaming service has started to test a new Instagram-like feed with a select group of users. Called Extras, the feed aggregates trailers, photos, and alerts for movies and TV shows, helping users with content discovery.

"We are testing a feed of video extras in our mobile app to help fans connect more deeply with the titles they love and discover new ones to watch. These tests typically vary in length of time and by region, and may not become permanent,” a Netflix spokesperson told Variety.

Users who are part of the testing group will see a new Extras button. Once in the feed, users can view videos which play automatically but without sound, scroll through images horizontally, and set reminders for movies and TV shows they want to watch by adding them to a list. There is also a sharing button, giving users the option to share content out to third-party apps such as WhatsApp, Messages, Instagram Stories, Messenger, Twitter, and Snapchat.

This isn’t the first time that the popular movie/TV streaming service has incorporated features from social media platforms. Last year, it introduced an Instagram Story-like feature for previews and more recently, rolled out integration with Instagram Stories.

Netflix’s dive into the news feed world showcases the recent trend of digital platforms realizing the importance and power of displaying content via a news feed especially with a younger generation. In addition, it highlights Instagram’s influence goes beyond social media. Expect more platforms to put their own twist on Instagram features.
