Facebook Launches Tools To Manage Your Time On Facebook & Instagram
For those who find themselves endlessly scrolling through social media feeds, Facebook is offering a helping hand. The company announced via a blog post that it has launched new tools to help you manage your time on your Facebook and Instagram accounts.
With input from the leading mental health experts and organizations as well as their own extensive research and feedback from the community, these tools include an activity dashboard, a daily reminder, and limited notifications. The tools can be accessed in the Settings section of each app. On Facebook, the tools are under "Your Time On Facebook," while on Instagram, the tools are under "Your Activity."
- Activity Dashboard: The dashboard shows the daily average time that you spend on the app as well as how much you spent on the app for a specific day of the week.
- Daily Reminder: You can set an alert for when you've reached the amount of time that you want to spend on that app for the day.
- Limit Notifications: You can limit the number of notifications that you receive for that app during a period of time, ranging from 15 minutes to 8 hours.
There is no question that we spend a great deal of time on social media. While platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have brought the world closer, there are certainly issues that come with it. In fact, research has shown that the over-consumption of social media can be quite detrimental to our mental health. Most of us scroll through these apps a few minutes at a time but don't realize how much time that adds up throughout the day.
At the end of the day, it's up to the individual on how much time they spend on social media, but tools like these definitely can help by making us aware of how much time we're actually on these apps. As with any problem, the first key to solving it is being aware of it. If you can visually see that you're spending six hours on Instagram, chances are you will make a conscious effort to spend a little less time on the app next time.
Other major players like Apple and Google have recently announced similar time-management tools. Let's hope a few more names are added to the list by the end of the year.
