Discord Rolls Out OpenAI Technology to Enhance Servers with AI
Discord recently revealed its expanded support for artificial intelligence (AI) features, which are powered by OpenAI Technology. These new features include:
Clyde: A tool that is now being integrated directly into Discord. Clyde can engage in conversations with members of servers, answer questions, recommend playlists, start new threads for groups of people, and access GIFs and emojis.
AutoMod: This feature is designed to block unwanted messages from servers before they are posted. Creators can now receive alerts when server rules are broken.
Conversation Summaries: Members can now catch up on discussions using AI-generated summaries that surface topics in any text channel, providing a message preview, the number of messages, and indicating who has participated in the discussion.
Along with other AI features that are in development, like Avatar Remix and Whiteboard with AI Preview, Discord is also launching an AI incubator to support and provide developers with resources to build AI on Discord.
Since the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT AI, social media platforms such as Snapchat, Meta, and YouTube have been introducing new AI initiatives. Discord has already incorporated some form of AI into roughly three million servers, and these new features will significantly increase AI's presence on the platform. This will benefit creators and their communities by providing faster access to information, easier ways to catch up on missed conversations, and improved server safety in line with established rules.
However, integrating AI into social media platforms has its drawbacks such as privacy concerns. Discord made changes to its Privacy Policy before announcing these features, revoking promises not to collect data about screen recordings and voice and video chats. Discord has clarified that OpenAI cannot use Discord user data for its training modules, and AI features will not record, store, or use any voice or video call content from users. Creators and brands must be mindful when using AI features and understand what they may be giving up in exchange for the benefits they provide.
