A few weeks ago, Clubhouse shared it would be launching creator monetization tools for users soon.

Fast forward to now, the buzzing social audio app is making good on its promise with the launch of Payments, the first of what it says is many creator monetization tools.

"Today, we’re thrilled to begin rolling out Payments—our first monetization feature for creators on Clubhouse. All users will be able to send payments today, and we’ll be rolling out the ability to receive payments in waves, starting with a small test group today. Our hope is to collect feedback, fine-tune the feature, and roll it out to everyone soon," the app said in a blog post.

100% Payments to creators

The way the feature works is relatively simple. Users can send a payment in Clubhouse by tapping on a creator's profile, who has the feature enabled, and then tapping on 'Send Money.' From there, they enter the amount they would like to send. When users do this for the first time, they will be prompted to register a credit or debit card of their choice. Stripe will charge users a small card processing fee, Clubhouse's payment processing partner; however, 100% of the payment will go to the creator.

Payments are similar to other creator monetization tools on platforms like Twitch and Patreon, where fans can support their favorite creators directly through direct payments like tipping and subscriptions.

This type of creator monetization model has been picking up steam over the last year. Although advertisements are still a substantial revenue stream for creators, many creators have shifted their attention to looking for ways to earn revenue directly from their fanbase. This shift makes the launch of Payments timely, giving creators the ability to get monetary support from their fans.

Creator-Friendly Tools & features Could Be Essential

With Spotify recently acquiring Locker Room, Facebook, and LinkedIn working on their own social audio experiences, Twitter continuing to build Spaces, and Discord rolling out Stage Channels, the social audio landscape is becoming crowded quickly. Creator-friendly tools and features like Payments could be essential for Clubhouse to stay ahead of the competition and keep its top audio creators from flocking elsewhere.
